This is probably harder than you expect, because Italian is relatively poor in synonyms compared to English. In English, we normally have at least two words for every concept, one from Latin and one from some other root. True synonyms in Italian I find to be relatively uncommon.

I agree that there are sometimes "fewer" synonyms in Italian, but Italian is a language that doesn't like repetition so there are lots of ways to say different things, and synonyms are just one of those ways. Lo Zanichelli has a great thesaurus that I consult a lot!
